  • Radioisotopic ash content sensor A 365CAN (LER 1) is based on the use of X-rays (the isotope Fe 55). In contrast to beta radiation that is used for measuring the density of materials, X-ray emission is mainly absorbed by mineral fillers such as kaolin, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, that are used in the manufacture of paper.

    To determine the percentage of the ash content of paper web is used a "soft" X-ray emission of the isotope Fe 55. Mass attenuation coefficient of radiation isotope Fe 55 has a significant dependence on the atomic number of the absorbing material. Mineral fillers used in the papermaking, such as kaolin, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate attenuates radiation of isotope Fe 55 more than cellulose. Measuring the ash content percentage is based on this effect.
